Practice

I started drawing at about seven, on the backs of my older brothers' school books. They were away at boarding school and the pages they left behind were covered in scribbles, and those scribbles were the first thing that made me want to draw. Comics finished the job. Spider-Man first, then the Incredible Hulk, and after that the pen never really went down.

I would call myself a non-conformist, multifaceted, surrealist artist. Multifaceted because I pull from a lot of places at once, different subjects and different fields, whatever I have been reading or watching or listening to, and then look for a way to put it into figures people already recognise. I research a great deal. Fashion runs through most of it, film sets the tone, and music is usually somewhere underneath.

The work starts faint. It is all made in Procreate, and I sketch thin with the brush opacity low, then darken the lines until I can see the idea properly. I build in grayscale before any colour goes down, because that is what tells me whether the picture is working. A flat brush and a pen brush do most of it. Lately the line has gone looser and more scribbled, and that has opened up more than I expected.
